AT A COCKTAIL PARTY

WHEN A FRIEND OR ACQUAINTANCE

COMPLIMENTS A LADY'S NEW ENSEMBLE .

She does not say:

"What? This old thing?"

"Well, you should like it, considering how much I paid for it."

"Harry will kill me if he ever finds out what I paid for it. This dress cost more than most of the people in this room make in a week."

"You don't think it makes me look fat?"

"Thanks a lot. I'll let you wear it some time."

But she does say:

"Thank you. I appreciate your telling me that."

Although a lady may think she is appearing modest, she is actually being rude when she declines to accept a compliment. Such responses suggest that she questions the taste of the person offering the compliment. If she chooses to do so, she may even reinforce her friend's opinion by saying, "Thank you. This is the first time I've worn it. It's a color I really like."
